Allah does not have to be just (Original: Allah n'est pas obligé ) is a novel by the Ivorian writer Ahmadou Kourouma (1927-2003) from the year 2000. The work was awarded in the same year with the Prix Renaudot and the Prix Goncourt des lycéens excellent.

Birahima is a 10 or 12 year old boy from northern Ivory Coast . His mother suffers from a leg amputation and dies, so that he becomes an orphan. The relatives send him to Liberia with the fetish priest Yacouba to look for his aunt there, who should look after him. But at the beginning of their journey, they are kidnapped by rebels from the Front National Patriotique ; Birahima becomes a child soldier and Yacouba becomes the trusted fetish priest of Colonel Papa le Bon.

From now on Birahima tells his odyssey- like journey in search of his aunt between 1993 and 1997. He has to cross war-ravaged countries (Liberia, Guinea , Sierra Leone ) and tells of the cruel living conditions of the child soldiers.

The full title of the book should actually be " Allah does not have to be just in all his things on earth." ( French Allah n'est pas obligé d'être juste dans toutes ses choses ici-bas. )
