Allen Frederick Clarke (born December 2, 1952 in Crayford ) is a retired English football player . The goalkeeper played in the Football League from 1970 to 1974 and made a total of 19 league appearances in three different divisions during this time.

Career

Clarke played at the beginning of his career for the amateur club Slade Green from the borough of the same name in the Greater London League . At the end of 1969 he came as a junior player to the East London-based professional club Charlton Athletic and signed his first professional contract in December 1970. In order to gain match practice, he was handed over to the Southern League club FC Margate for a few months in March 1971 , followed by a loan stay in the Football League Third Division with the Bristol Rovers , for which he won a 3-2 victory against Notts County made his debut in professional football. Immediately after his return, he made his debut for Charlton Athletic on October 5, 1971 in a 1-2 loss in the League Cup to the Bristol Rovers. Clarke was also used in the two following league games in the Second Division , replacing Derek Bellotti . Although Charlton got three points from the two games, summer signing John Dunn was the new goalkeeper. Charlton was relegated to the third division at the end of the season and played only third class for the first time since 1935.

For Clarke, the chances of playing did not improve even after relegation and so he was first loaned to FC Ramsgate in the Southern League, followed by another loan stay at the fourth division club Exeter City in February . At the end of the season, Charlton released Clarke from his contract and made it possible for him to move to Exeter City free of charge. His stay there ended after one season in the summer of 1974. The goalkeeper then continued his career at FC Dartford in the Southern League, but was soon released for transfer. He finally left the club in March 1975 and returned to his youth club Slade Green.
