All Souls' Day , oil painting by Jakub Schikaneder , 1888

In connection with the remembrance of all souls , celebrated in the church year of the Roman Catholic Church as a day of remembrance on November 2nd, the faithful can win a complete indulgence once a day in the period from November 1st to 8th according to the regulations of the church . This all soul indulgence can only be turned to the poor souls in purgatory .

According to the teaching of the Catholic Church, an indulgence is an inheritance of temporal penalties for the living and the dead, given by God and mediated by the Church. The prerequisite for gaining an indulgence is not so much the external work, but rather the inner sense of penance as an attitude of openness towards God, who alone forgives sins and gives divine life.

The usual prerequisites are required to obtain the All Souls Indulgence:

  • the receipt of the sacrament of penance , whereby the one-time receipt is sufficient for the acquisition of several perfect indulgences if the disposition is appropriate
  • the determined turning away from all sin
  • the reception of St. Communion and prayer in the mind of the Holy Father

These requirements can be met several days before or after the respective drainage works. In addition, you need:

If the full disposition is missing or if one of the conditions remains unfulfilled, it is a partial indulgence for the deceased. One can be obtained repeatedly on these and on the other days of the year by visiting the cemetery.

Toties-quoties-indulgence

Inscription on the Lateran basilica indicating the possibility of obtaining a perfect indulgence toties quoties for the living and the deceased

Until the reorganization of indulgences in the Roman Catholic Church on June 29, 1968, All Souls Indulgence could be won as often as someone visited a church after having received the sacraments (once) and prayed there with the Pope's intention to pray. It was granted by a decree of Pope Pius X on June 24, 1914 and was popularly referred to as “Toties-quoties-Ablass” (Latin toties - quoties “as often as often”).

In the new handbook of indulgences ( Enchiridion Indulgentiarum ) of 1986, the Holy See determined that the perfect indulgence on All Souls Day for the deceased can only be won once and no more toties quoties .
