Jakub Schikaneder (born February 27, 1855 in Prague ; † November 15, 1924 there ) was a Bohemian painter .

Life

Schikaneder came from the family of a German customs officer , his mother Leokadie (née Běhavá) was of Czech origin. There are different statements about the date of birth in the older literature; however, August 16, 1842 and March 1 or 15, 1855 are given. Despite the poor circumstances of the family, he was able to study. One reason for this was the family's love of art, whose ancestors included Emanuel Schikaneder , who wrote the libretto for Mozart's singspiel The Magic Flute (1791). After studying at the Prague Academy from 1871 to 1879, among others with Josef Mathias Trenkwald and Jan Swerts, and in Munich with Gabriel von Max and in Paris he was involved with Emanuel Krescenc Liška in furnishing the royal box in the National Theater . However, these works were lost in the fire in 1881. He then traveled through Europe, visiting Germany, England, Scotland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy and France. From 1891 to 1923 he taught at the Prague School of Applied Arts . He was one of the admirers of the Munich School at the end of the 19th century. He is buried in the Vinohrady cemetery in Prague.
