Jan Swerts

Jan Swerts (born December 25, 1820 in Antwerp , † August 11, 1879 in Marienbad ) was a Belgian painter .

Live and act

He, a student of Nicaise de Keyser , made a name for himself in the monumental art of Belgium by getting the Belgian government to hold an exhibition of boxes by German masters in Brussels and Antwerp (1859). With Godefried Guffens he created a series of murals of religious and historical content, which follow the direction of the New German classics.

From 1874 he became director of the Academy of Fine Arts, in Prague he died on August 11, 1879 in Marienbad .
