The General Faculty Hospital Prague ( Czech : Všeobecná fakultní nemocnice v Praze , abbreviation: VFN) is one of the most important and oldest hospitals in Prague and one of the largest university hospitals in the Czech Republic . The main building has been on Karlsplatz in Prague's New Town since it was founded at the end of the 18th century .

history

The Imperial and Royal General Hospital in Prague was founded by Emperor Joseph II . The emperor decided on the establishment of new central hospitals in his monarchy on May 24th, 1781, so a general hospital was established in Vienna . In Prague, however, there were delays because it was not clear where the new hospital should be. It was not until October 1786, during his visit to Prague, that the emperor spoke out in favor of the cattle market (today Karlsplatz), where a former women's monastery was rebuilt by the builder Franz Anton Leonard Herget (1741–1800) for the new purposes . The new hospital was only opened under Emperor Leopold II on December 1, 1790, and was the fourth general hospital in the monarchy after Vienna, Brno and Olomouc.

Hospital pastoral care has been available to patients since 2016 .
