A general infection or generalized infection is understood to be an infectious disease in which the infectious agent (the pathogen ) enters the organism via an entry portal (e.g. a skin lesion) to become continuously ( in the tissue ), lymphogenically (via the lymphatic vessels ) or haematogenically (via the blood , in the case of a bacterial infection as bacteremia ) spreading in the body and settling in other organs . One also speaks of a generalization of the infection.

Stages

The usually asymptomatic first stage (the incubation stage in which the pathogens reach the regional lymph nodes from the point of entry ), the generalization stage (second stage) and the stage of organ manifestation (as the third stage) must be distinguished.
