The Allied Irish Banks ( AIB ) are an Irish commercial banking group. It is one of the four largest commercial banks in Ireland and operates one of the largest branch networks in Ireland. The banking group was founded in 1966 through the merger of Provincial Bank , Royal Bank of Ireland and Munster & Leinster Bank . Allied Irish Banks are headquartered in Dublin , Ireland . The company's shares are included in the ISEQ Overall Index on the Irish Stock Exchange .

The Allied Irish Banks employ almost 26,000 people worldwide (as of 2007). In the wake of the financial crisis , the Irish government supported the bank in 2009 with a financial rescue package amounting to 3.5 billion euros and 19 percent became state-owned; In December 2010, the state provided another rescue package worth EUR 3.7 billion and took control of the bank.

From 2017, the Irish state began privatizing the previously nationalized banking group. The AIB group completed an IPO in the same year .
