Allison J71
The Allison J71 is a jet engine made by the US manufacturer Allison .
The engine was developed as a further development from the Allison J35 and was originally to be given the designation J35-A-23. The main change concerned the type and shape of the combustion chamber . While the J35 still had ten separate combustion chambers, the J71 had injection and combustion in a large, ring-shaped combustion chamber. Allison referred to this design as "cannular".
The compression took place in a 16-stage axial compressor, driven by an also axial three-stage turbine. The engine was suitable for all weather conditions and had its own de-icing system in the inlet, which was heated with bleed air. Hydraulics supplied the adjusting elements in the inlet and on the outlet nozzle. The engine control was electro-hydraulic with a control unit developed and built by Honeywell .
During the approval test, the engine produced a take-off thrust of 44.5 kN at 6100 min-1.
J71-A-2
First production version for the McDonnell F3H . Equipped with an afterburner , it delivered a static thrust of 62.2 kN.
J71-A-3
Version for the Northrop SM-62 Snark as a loss engine. This version was originally intended for a further development of the Northrop F-89 , the F-89E. This engine delivered a thrust of 43.2 kN.
J71-A-4
Version for the Martin P6M with an afterburner that is shorter than the version A-2. The maximum thrust with afterburner was 57.9 kN.
YJ71-A-5
Version for the non-produced Boeing B-47C with 47.7 kN thrust.
J71-A-7
Improved version of the J71-A-2, should be used in the Republic F-105 .
J71-A-9
Version for the Douglas B-66A without afterburner. The decision to manufacture this version was made on August 5, 1952.
J71-A-11
Improved version for the Douglas RB-66B, also without an afterburner.
J71-A-13
For the variants Douglas B-66B, EB-66C / E, RB-66B / C, WB-66D
