The Almaty Nature Reserve is one of ten nature reserves in Kazakhstan . It is only 25 km from the city of Almaty and covers 733 km². The highest peak, Pik Talgar , reaches a height of 5000 meters. It is enclosed by the Ile Alatau National Park . Not far to the north, in the adjacent arid regions, is the Altyn-Emel National Park .

history

The reserve was established in 1931 and received the status of a state nature reserve in 1935. It existed in this form until 1951. In 1961 it was reopened. In the meantime, some arid areas in the north were part of the reserve, such as the Singing Dunes, which are now in the Altyn-Emel National Park.

Wildlife

The number of snow leopards in the reserve is around 3–4 pairs. This means that the reserve is home to the only stable snow leopard population in Kazakhstan in addition to the one in the Aksu-Jabagly nature reserve . The population of the Siberian ibex , the main prey of the shy cat, is 600–700 animals. The snow leopards usually inhabit subapline and alpine areas at altitudes of 2500 m and above. In winter, they follow their prey to lower altitudes and are often found below the tree line. The number of snow leopards seems to have remained constant over the past few years. Investigations of traces in the years 2005–2008 indicated this. The number of ibex even increased. However, there is at least a potential risk that the disruption, increased by increasing tourism, will affect wildlife populations. Mountaineers and trekking groups in particular visit the area. Snow leopards sometimes use the same paths as mountaineers. The reserve itself has six official ecotrails (eco-trails). In addition, mountaineers from the Ile Alatau National Park often switch to the reserve without permission. Other mammals in the reserve are wild boar , wolf , Eurasian lynx , Tien Shan elk , beech marten , ermine and gray marmot . Among the birds, bearded vultures , golden eagles and Himalayan king cockerel should be highlighted. In the neighboring Ile Alatau National Park, Argalis and the Asian wild dog are also found.
