The Altyn-Emel National Park ( Kazakh Алтынемел мемлекеттік ұлттық табиғи паркі ; Russian Алтын-Эмель национальный парк ) is a national park in Kazakhstan .

landscape

In the Altyn-Emel National Park

It is located in the southeast of Kazakhstan and protects 4596 square kilometers of predominantly dry and mountainous land. About 20 square kilometers of the park area are covered by river forests, which are particularly valuable habitats. Deserts make up around 45%, rocky areas around 30% of the land area, grasslands and forests each around 10%. The remaining 5% is covered by bushland. The national park surrounds the southwestern foothills of the Djungarian Alatau and extends in the south to the Qapschaghai reservoir and areas of the Ili river above it . Not far from the Altyn-Emel National Park on the opposite side of the Ili is the Sharyn National Park with its impressive rock formations.

Wildlife

The park is home to 70 species of mammals, including the Siberian ibex , the crop gazelle ( Gazella subgutturoza ), the argali ( Ovis ammon ) and the Turkmen half donkey ( Equus hemionus kulan ). The half donkeys descend from 32 mares and four stallions that were reintroduced after the species was extinct. There are now over 2000 of these equines in the park.

In 2003, eight Przewalski wild horses were brought into the reserve. Their population shrank to five animals and had to be supported by additional feeding. In 2008 another four horses were brought into the reserve. The animals are now reproducing successfully.

In 2007, Bukhara deer were introduced into the river forests of the Ili within the national park. Although the rare deer already lived on the south bank of the Kapchagai reservoir in the Karatchingil State game area , it was impossible to spread naturally from there into the national park. The national park is considered to be well protected, poaching and illegal logging are relatively rare, which is why the chances of successful settlement are considered high. The Siberian ibex is hunted and shot in the park. It is considered a respected hunting trophy.

tourism

The national park administration is located in the small village of Baschi , north of the park. It offers guided tours to the Singing Dunes, the Aktau and Katutau Mountains and other attractions in the national park. It is forbidden to enter the national park without a local guide. In the Altyn-Emel National Park itself there are several overnight accommodations in all price ranges. Free camping is allowed, but only when accompanied by a guide.

There are no asphalt roads in the national park and the routes to the tourist attractions are several kilometers long.

The Altyn Emel National Park offers the following attractions:
