Lignières Castle

The castle Lignières ( French Château de Lignières ) is located in the commune of Lignières in the French department of Cher .

Jeanne de Valois , daughter of Louis XI, grew up in the mighty fortress, once built by the Lignières family . , on. Born in 1464, she was born at the age of twelve with Ludwig von Orléans, who later became King Louis XII. , married, who divorced her after 22 years. She then retired to her castle in Bourges and founded the contemplative order of the Annuntians . Even Catherine d'Amboise , widow of Philibert de Beaujeu, lord of Lignières, lived here and devoted himself to poetry and prayer.

Today's Lignières Castle replaced the medieval structure and was completed between 1654 and 1660, including the outbuildings, courtyard, moats, farm buildings and park. The builder of the complex, which was built by the architect François Le Vau , brother of Louis Le Vau , was Jérôme de Nouveau , surintendant des Postes, who bought the property in 1653.

The building complex is typical of French classicism, albeit a little more sober. Decorative elements such as statues, busts and reliefs were almost completely dispensed with. A bridge leads over the moat into the main courtyard bordered by the main building and two large square pavilions. The surrounding park was redesigned as an English garden in 1827.

Today's palace essentially corresponds to the original ensemble of buildings. However, some parts have been renewed or rebuilt over the centuries. In the 19th century, the gallery was replaced by a mill, which in turn had to give way to a newly built gallery in 1920.

In 1683, Lignières Castle came into the possession of the Bourbon-Busset family. The current lord of the castle is Sixto von Bourbon-Parma .

The complex has been classified as a Monument historique since 1935 .
