Almut Wieland-Karimi (* 1965 ) is a German orientalist. She is the managing director of the Center for International Peace Operations in Berlin.

Life

After studying oriental studies at the University of Bonn, Wieland-Karimi wrote her doctoral thesis at the Humboldt University in Berlin on the role of Afghan leaders in Afghanistan. For many years she worked internationally for the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES), most recently as head of the country office for the USA and Canada based in Washington, DC. From 2002 to 2005 she set up the foundation's representative office in Kabul (Afghanistan) and initiated numerous programs there to promote civil society and parliamentary structures. Since 2009 she has been the managing director of the Center for International Peace Operations.

Wieland-Karimi is a member of the international advisory board of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), the advisory board of the Federal Academy for Security Policy (BAKS), the leadership academy of the Bundeswehr and the Mercator Foundation . She is also a member of the Presidium of the German Society for the United Nations (DGVN). In addition, Wieland-Karimi is a Liaison Lecturer at the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and works as honorary managing director of the Mediothek Afghanistan, a non-governmental organization that promotes media and strengthens community building.
