Aloyzas Sakalas

Aloyzas Sakalas (born July 6, 1931 in Anykščiai ) is a Lithuanian social democratic politician and scientist. From 2004 Sakalas was a member of the European Parliament for the party Lietuvos socialdemokratų partija (LSDP).

Life

After graduating from secondary school in Kaunas , graduated from the Kaunas Polytechnic Institute in 1960 with a degree in engineering and worked from 1960 to 1962 as an engineer at the Institute of Electrography . He received his doctorate in 1970, became associate professor in 1972 and completed his habilitation in physics and mathematics in 1977 . From 1980 Sakalas was professor and from 1982 to 1990 lecturer, associate professor and professor at Vilnius University .

Sakalas was a member of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP) from 1989 to 1991 and chaired the party between 1991 and 1999. Since 1999 he has been honorary chairman of the LSDP. Sakalas was a member of the Lithuanian Parliament ( Seimas ) between 1990 and 2004 . He was also chairman and board member of the electoral review committee from 1990 and 1992, deputy speaker of parliament between 1992 and 1996 and chairman of the legal committee from 2000 to 2004. In 2004 he moved to the European Parliament. In addition, from 1993 to 2004 Sakalas was the chairman of the organization "Help the Lithuanian Children".
