Alpbach Gorge

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Alpbach Gorge is a gorge between Hasliberg and Meiringen in the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland .

location

The Alpbach Gorge is traversed by the Alpbach, which rises above Hasliberg, flows through Hasliberg-Reuti and, after it has merged with the Milibach (Mühlebach), flows into the Aare at Meiringen . Above Meiringen, the stream flows down a rocky slope. At a height difference of around 200 meters, it has dug a deep gorge and forms several cascades and at the bottom a larger waterfall.

Tourist development

In 1891 a path through the gorge was opened. Meiringen was an important tourist destination at that time and the gorge offered another attraction, even if it was never as well known as the Aare gorge or the Reichenbach falls on the opposite side of the valley. In the 1930s, the flow of visitors decreased, the path gradually fell into disrepair and had to be closed.

In 2006, construction work began to reopen the path, which was opened on May 24, 2008. The most striking part of it is a red bridge that crosses the Alpbach directly above the large waterfall. The path is a white-blue-white marked Alpine route that can be covered in just over an hour. It is closed in winter.
