The Aare Gorge near Meiringen

The Aare Gorge is a gorge near Meiringen in the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland . The Aare flows through it and increases its flow rate considerably. The Aare leaves the gorge at almost 12 km / h.

Emergence

A limestone rock bar between Innertkirchen and Meiringen , the Kirchet , obstructed the flow of the Aare from the Grimsel area . The melt water under the ice age Aar glacier carved seven gorges into this rock. Today's Aare Gorge is the youngest of the various transverse and longitudinal gorges. The length of the Aare Gorge is 1400 meters. At its narrowest point the gorge is a meter wide; the highest side wall rises 180 meters above the river.

As you can read from the place name Innertkirchen, the rock bar of the Aare gorge divides the valley into inside and outside . The Hauptstrasse 6 increases by three hairpin curves on the south side steeper around 80 meters to Lammiboden to 710 meters of where the road at a uniform slope to Meiringen drops (602 m). The gorge cannot be seen from the road.

Development

In 1888 the gorge was made accessible. A catwalk was built and evening lighting was added in 1912. The gorge is open daily from the beginning of April to November 1st and you can walk through it using the footbridges and smaller bypass tunnels. The Aare Gorge West train station is at the West entrance on the Meiringen side and the Aare Gorge East tunnel stop of the Meiringen-Innertkirchen Railway is located at the East entrance on the Innertkirchen side .
