history

AlphaDream was founded on January 12, 2000. She was then known as the Alpha Star. Several members of its staff were key employees of Square. They are known for their RPGs, most notably the Mario & Luigi series for the Game Boy Advance , Nintendo DS, and Nintendo 3DS . The company was founded in 2000 by Tetsuo Mizuno, the former President of Square. Her first game, Koto Battle, was a Pokémon- style role-playing game in which the player battles three of his twenty character cards against AI opponents. It was released for the Game Boy Color in March 2001 . While it is only available in Japan , it was later re-released for the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console . AlphaDream's next game was Tomato Adventure , which was released in January 2002. The player, as DeMille, a tomato hater in the ketchup kingdom, fights his way out of his outcast village to save his girlfriend. The weapons in the game are like toys and the fights against opponents involve mini-games. Tomato Adventure was co-developed with Graphic Research and directed by Chihiro Fujioka of Super Mario RPG and Final Fantasy Legend III . It was expected to be released as Gimmick Land on the Game Boy Color, but has been moved to the new Game Boy Advance and renamed for better marketing. Tomato Adventure was not released outside of Japan. AlphaDream soon became the developer of the JRPG game series Mario & Luigi . The first entry in this series, Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga , was published in 2003. On October 1, 2019, AlphaDream filed for bankruptcy, citing weak revenue and high development costs, as well as an inability to keep up with growing debt (which was in the March 2018 to over ¥ 465 million (at the exchange rate at the time, it was around € 3.5 million).
