Alphons Koechlin (entrepreneur)

Alphons Koechlin (born April 6, 1821 in Basel ; † February 6, 1893 there ) was a Swiss entrepreneur and politician .

Live and act

Alphons Koechlin was the son of the silk ribbon manufacturer Samuel Koechlin and his wife Valeria, nee Burckhardt. After attending the pedagogy, he did a commercial apprenticeship and then went to France for three years . In 1847 he built a silk ribbon factory with his father and brother. One year after its sale in 1862, he founded the Basler Handelsbank with Adolf Burckhardt , where he was a member of the board of directors. From 1861 to 1893 he was a member of the board of directors of the Swiss Central Railway, from which the Swiss Federal Railways emerged. In 1875 after the dissolution of the trade college, he was a co-founder of the Basler Handels- und Industrieverein. From 1876 to 1891 he presided over the Basel Chamber of Commerce and from 1876 to 1878 the suburb .

Koechlin was also politically active. From 1853 to 1881 he was a member of the Basel city council, which he chaired from 1876 to 1877. from 1859 to 1875 he was also a member of the Small Council, the cantonal government. At the same time he was President of the Economic Commission, from 1859 to 1877 a member of the Finance and Trade College. From 1863 to 1875 he chaired the trade college, from 1867 to 1875 the state college and from 1870 to 1875 the cantonal factory inspection. He played a key role in the Basel Factory Act of 1869, which introduced the twelve-hour day and prohibited child labor.

From 1866 to 1875 Koechlin also represented his canton in the Council of States, which he presided over in 1874/75. He campaigned for trade and industry issues. With the constitutional revision of 1875 and the subsequent elections, which brought the Liberals a majority, Koechlin lost its previous dominant political importance within the canton of Basel-Stadt. In 1879 he was still able to act as a federal agent when concluding the trade agreement with Italy.

Koechlin married Adèle Geigy, a daughter of Karl Geigy .
