The Alpineum is a museum and alpine diorama in Lucerne (Switzerland). It shows several large panorama pictures that were painted by the two Swiss painters Ernst Hodel Senior and his son Ernst Hodel Junior . The large paintings on display show glimpses of the mountains of the Swiss Alps on a total of several hundred square meters of canvas .

history

The listed classicist building was originally built in 1885 as a lion monument museum near the glacier garden , directly opposite the lion monument and at that time showed the history of the Tuileries Tower of August 10, 1792 in Paris. But this exhibition did not last ten years due to the lack of visitor numbers.

The building was finally acquired in 1895 by the painter Ernst Hodel Senior , who had already painted large panoramic pictures of the Rigi and Pilatus mountains for the then still existing Meyers Diorama on Museums-Platz in Lucerne and found the ideal space for the presentation of his mighty Alpine images. With the help of his son Ernst Hodel Junior , who had also devoted himself to painting, he gradually realized an alpine diorama which opened its doors in May 1901 under the name Alpineum.

A multilingual porter accompanied and explained the tour of the Alpineum until around 1975. Around 1990 the diorama was adapted to the zeitgeist and can be viewed independently since then. More recently, reliefs of the respective mountain regions, as well as model houses, ship and mountain railway models have been integrated. The additional exhibition on stereoscopic photography can also be viewed : The stereo image - spatial 3D photography around 1900 .

Today the Alpineum is run by Daniel E. Hodel, the great-grandson or grandson of the two painters Hodel.
