Ernst Hodel junior (1881–1955). The panorama picture from 1927, with its area of ​​5 by 15 meters, is one of the largest wall paintings in Switzerland. It was restored in accordance with the preservation order in 2015 and can be seen in the Basel SBB station concourse.

Ernst Hodel junior (born July 29, 1881 in Lucerne ; † October 5, 1955 there ) was a Swiss painter and son of the landscape painter Ernst Hodel senior .

Life and work

Ernst Hodel received his artistic training at the Royal Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . After various long study stays in Paris and Milan , he returned to Switzerland. As an artist, he was rather conservative and primarily painted rural scenes.

In Basel SBB has two painted by Hodel murals, including a five by fifteen meters large painting of Lake Lucerne . He also completed the exhibition of large-scale Alpine panorama pictures that his father had initiated in the Alpineum Lucerne .

He found his final resting place in the Friedental cemetery .
