When father's beard was still red is an autobiographical novel by Wolfdietrich Schnurre from 1958 . The book is subtitled: Novel in Stories and in some editions, as in the first edition, contains illustrations by the author.

content

The novel is set in Berlin at the time of the Great Depression and the beginning of the Nazi era , roughly between 1926 and 1936. Bruno is a boy who lives in a rented apartment with his single father. The father is unemployed, and in partly sad, partly humorous episodes, the novel describes incidents from his childhood and youth, which mostly have to do with the father, with his unemployment, the poverty of the small family and the efforts of the father, the son nonetheless to prepare beautiful childhood and youth.

Narrative form

The novel is told from the perspective of the protagonist Bruno, albeit in retrospect and from the perspective of the adult Bruno of the post-war period. At the time of the book's publication, Schnurre, like its narrator, was 38 years old.

background

The novel is autobiographical, even if the characters have been given different names:

“... because I am identical with Bruno, the little boy who told it, and I knew the time and the background from my own experience. And finally the father, the real main character, is really there, and thank God he still lives in Berlin. "

- Purr in a letter from 1963

Although he was born in Frankfurt am Main, the author had an extraordinary childhood in Berlin. Schnurre explained: “I was born in Frankfurt am Main in 1920; I was born in 1928 in northeast Berlin. "
