Alt St. Martinus (Kaarst)
Alt St. Martinus is the original Roman Catholic parish church in the city of Kaarst in the Rhine district of Neuss .
history
The nave of the Romanesque basilica St. Martinus was built in the 11th century on an older burial ground. According to Paul Clemen, the number 1146 is said to have been named in an inscription in the south aisle as the year of construction. In the middle of the 12th century the west tower, at the end of the 12th century the side aisles and the choir apse were added. In the liber valoris the church was mentioned around 1300 still connected with the parish church in Willich under a pastor.
Due to the increased number of parishes, St. Martinus was changed several times in the 19th century. In 1832–42 the old choir was replaced by a larger new building, and a transept for the baptistery and sacristy was added in the 1860s. In 1887 the choir was again extended to the east. After the Second World War, another expansion was considered, but in 1955/56 Neu St. Martinus was built elsewhere as the new Kaarster Catholic parish church.
Alt St. Martinus was laid down in 1961–69, except for the tower and the walls of the main nave, and the high medieval shape of the church was subsequently reconstructed.
