Old St. Willibrordus

Alt St. Willibrordus is the former Roman Catholic parish church and today's annex church in Kirdorf , a district of Bedburg ( Rhein-Erft-Kreis ) in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

The Essen Abbey was already wealthy in Kirdorf in 988. The church there was only mentioned in the Liber valoris around 1300. The church was under the patronage of the monastery. The Romanesque church of St. Willibrordus was replaced around 1500 by a building in the late Gothic style . The year 1505 was found on two glass windows that were no longer in existence, and the number 1533 was found on wall paintings in 1889.

The west tower was presumably given today's upper floor after the war destruction by Sweden and Hesse in 1645. The basement of the tower and the nave show the alternation of tuff and brick bands typical of the region, such as St. Cosmas and Damian in Glesch or St. Ursula in Lipp .

After the Second World War, the preserved outer walls of the nave and north aisle were secured and, after removing the supports, the interior was converted into a large, rectangular hall with a flat ceiling.
