As a former president in is Germany and Austria , a federal president called after leaving the office of state.

Germany

In Germany, the Federal President continues to be addressed with the title “Mr. Federal President” after leaving office. As a former head of state, he has a lifelong entitlement to the full salary from his term of office (“ honorary pay ”) as well as his own office and company car .

Former Federal President is an unofficial, slang term. There are currently three "former federal presidents" in Germany: Horst Köhler , Christian Wulff and Joachim Gauck .

Austria

Austria has a living former Federal President in Heinz Fischer (since July 8, 2016) . Otherwise there have been only two former federal presidents since 1945: Rudolf Kirchschläger (1986–2000) and Kurt Waldheim (1992–2007). All other former heads of state of the Second Republic have died in office, most recently Thomas Klestil in 2004.

Switzerland

Since in Switzerland the function of the Federal President among the Federal Councilors is reassigned every year ( primus inter pares ), there is no former Federal President in this sense. In contrast, those who have resigned or who have not been re-elected are entitled to a pension and certain privileges.
