The old cotton mill

The old cotton spinning mill is a former industrial complex in the central Saarland town of St. Ingbert . The building ensemble is a listed building.

history

The cotton spinning mill was founded in 1885 by the Swiss entrepreneur Max Schuler from Wetzikon as a textile company and expanded again and again until 1938. The manufacture of cotton spinning consisted of the production of simple and fine cotton yarns that were further processed. All operations were done by machine. On average, 230 employees produced 35,000 kg of yarn per month. In the 1930s and 1950s, the outbuildings in particular were rebuilt and expanded. In October 1964 production was stopped due to the poor profit situation. From 1964 to 1997, the former cotton mill was used by the Bundeswehr as a medical depot. 3 reserve hospital groups and 5 ambulance trains were housed. In the summer of 1997, the Bundeswehr base in St. Ingbert was dissolved as part of the reduction in the number of troops.

The building complex was placed under monument protection in 1992 as a document of objective functionalism in industrial buildings at the turn of the century. In November 1998, the gallery owner Werner Deller acquired the cotton spinning mill and founded the old cotton spinning mill property management GmbH & Co. KG. In the following years he developed a concept for the new use of the site. In 2007 the city council decided to move some of its cultural institutions to the old cotton mill. Purchase contracts were signed in autumn 2011 and construction work for an extended use could begin.

Initially, the renovation work should be completed by the end of 2013 and the building should be ready for occupancy. In 2014 it was announced that the cultural center would go into operation at the end of 2016. Construction has been halted several times since 2013, and work has been on hold again since 2018.

building

The core of the plant is the brick and sandstone spinning mill building with three floors and a basement. The storeys consist of almost continuous 5 m high rooms with large windows and are dominated by riveted steel supports.

The former cotton warehouse has a special ceiling construction with solid oak wood planks on tight beams and steel girders. The facade is divided by 2 loading gate axes.

Outdoor facilities

The approximately 5000 m² outdoor facilities consist of 800 m² sealed areas and 4200 m² green spaces.
