The Alte Feuerwache civic center is a socio-cultural center in the Agnesviertel in downtown Cologne .

history

In 1890 the main fire brigade building was completed on a 5000 m² plot in the Agnesviertel near today's Ebertplatz . In 1974 the City Council of Cologne decided to demolish the building after the fire brigade had moved . A competition swimming pool was planned at this point. In 1976 a “fire station” working group was formed in the Northern Old Town Citizens' Initiative (BINA), which opposed the demolition of the buildings and developed a usage concept. In 1977 this initiative founded the Bürgerzentrum Alte Feuerwache eV (BAF), which intended to run a citizens, communication and cultural center in the building complex. In 1978, after talks with the association, the city of Cologne also sought to preserve the fire station and convert it into a community center. In 1980, a large mural was created on the southern firewall facing Sudermanplatz with a poem by Nazim Hikmet, which helped shape the quarter for a long time . From 1981, the association received the rights to temporary use of the site, which it officially operates as a community center from 1986 after a decision by the CDU and the Greens in the Cologne city council. After various cuts in subsidies by the public sector, the fire station has been raising around half of the operating costs through its own efforts since 2000.

Self-management

The Alte Feuerwache civic center is a self-administered center. It sees itself as a place in which a variety of social, ecological and democratic initiatives and associations can not only use a room temporarily or permanently, but also enable encounters between people from the arts, crafts, education, culture, community work and non-party politics that would otherwise not take place.
