The old church is a Protestant church in the center of the Wuppertal district of Langerfeld . It is located in the immediate vicinity of Langerfelder Markt and, next to the Beckacker Church, is one of the two places of worship of the Evangelical Church Community Langerfeld .

The church corresponds to the type of a hall church made of natural ashlar with surrounding wooden galleries and a baroque pulpit. The architectural style still shows clear elements of the Bergisch Baroque in the interior , but already marks the end of this era with the abandonment of an onion dome hood. The choir is oriented to the northwest and was adapted to the winding streets in the center of Langerfeld before the expansion of Langerfelder Straße.

history

Due to the high number of industrial companies located in Langerfeld, especially ribbon knitting , the number of Protestants living in Langerfeld rose sharply in the 18th century . The first services were held from 1713 in a church school building on Spitzenstrasse. In 1766, the Langerfeld Protestants were finally allowed to found their own parish, which initially belonged to the Schwelm parish . In 1767 the foundation stone of the first church was laid, which could initially be built until 1770. Due to a lack of money, the building was largely inactive for the next few years, until the first service could finally be celebrated in the initially provisional church in 1786. It was not until 1821 that the church tower could be completed with the addition of the pointed hood, the work on the interior continued until 1823. In 1911 the church was finally renamed the Old Church due to the construction of the Kreuzkirche , until then the name Langerfeld Church was common.

During both wars the church remained largely intact except for the loss of the stained glass windows. Only the large round window above the apse was not restored after the Second World War . In spring 2015, a comprehensive renovation of the outer walls, the tower and the interior began, which was completed on time for the 250th anniversary of the community. During this time, the services took place in the parish hall on Inselstraße.
