History and description of the building

Legend on the wall of the building

The municipal mint of the old town of Hildesheim was housed in this building until 1772 , the council of which had received the coin rack around 1300 . Since the minting of the coins took place in great heat, the mint consciously chose a building that, in contrast to most other structures in Hildesheim's old town, was not made of wood, but entirely of stone. From 1800, after a renovation, the old coin was used as an apartment for the servant of the Andreanum and as a storage room for files . From around 1926 it was the location of a transformer station for the Hildesheim municipal utilities . After the building burned down after the bombing raid on Hildesheim on March 22, 1945 , it was raised by one floor as part of the reconstruction in 1947.

An additional row of windows was created during the reconstruction. The two ogival doors and the four arched windows with Gothic tracery on the first floor are reminiscent of the time the building was built. To the west there is a gate entrance, in the arch of which a keystone with the year 1530 is attached.

The part of Andreasplatz where the building is located was given the street name An der Alte Münze on November 1, 1932 .
