The Alte Mainbrücke Zellingen is a sidewalk and bicycle bridge that spans the Main between Zellingen and Retzbach in Lower Franconia at river kilometer 235.41 . The structure has a lane.

history

Bridge construction loan from the municipality of Zellingen am Main dated June 22, 1884

In the 19th century there was a Main ferry between Zellingen and Retzbach for the intersection of traffic routes on the left and right of the Main. In the 1880s, it carried 170,000 people and 5,500 wagons a year. In particular, the Retzbach station on the Main-Spessart-Bahn , which opened in 1854, ensured a strong increase in traffic. The Zellingen municipal administration voted for the first time in 1877 for the construction of a fixed and therefore weather-independent Main crossing with costs of 266,000 marks. However, the royal district office in Karlstadt refused to approve the construction project because it did not consider the financing to be secure. In 1880 the formation of a bridge building committee followed and in 1881 the municipal administration again confirmed the construction of a bridge over the Main with a vote. The district office accepted the renewed application in October 1883 and the royal government of Lower Franconia approved it in November of the same year. The construction costs of around 206,000 marks were covered by a bank loan of 170,000 marks, the income from a special cut of wood in the amount of 30,000 marks and a state grant. The loan should be serviced through the bridge toll revenue. In December 1883 the building site was marked out and on November 9, 1884, the Main Bridge was inaugurated by the Würzburg cathedral pastor Joseph von Schork .

On March 27, 1945, the Wehrmacht blew up the Main Bridge. This destroyed three superstructures. The reconstruction, which cost around 390,000 Reichsmarks, was completed on November 9, 1947. At that time a ferry connection had been set up as a replacement. In 1964 the bridge was taken over by the Free State of Bavaria , which among other things had a cantilevered sidewalk construction built on the lower side of the river in the early 1970s. After the completion of the new Retzbach-Zellingen Main Bridge as part of the construction of the Zellinger bypass in 1993, the importance of the old Main Bridge for regional traffic decreased.

The building was transferred back to the municipality in 1996. In 2006, however, the bridge had to be closed to road traffic due to a poor state of construction. A replacement new building was not carried out due to the high costs for the community. Extensive structural investigations have shown that a long-term preservation of the structure is possible through renovation.

The bridge was repaired as a pedestrian and bicycle bridge between 2014 and 2015 for around four million euros. Among other things, the external footpath and cycle path were dismantled, the bridge superstructures were raised by 80 centimeters and protective structures were erected against ship impacts.

Bridge soffit

The Main Bridge is a steel truss beam construction with parallel belts in a trapezoidal shape, which are arranged above the roadway. It has four openings with spans of 43 m. In the longitudinal direction, the 172 m long bridge consists of four single span girders. The carriageway is 4.7 m wide, around 0.5 m wide curbs are arranged on both sides. The sidewalks and sidewalks were 1.5 m wide. For shipping at the highest navigable water level, the greatest clear height is 6.2 m.
