Old post office (Lingen)
The old post office in Lingen (Ems) was built in 1653, in the center of the market and right next to the historic town hall , for the post office that has been in the town since 1550.
It is a two-storey half - timbered building with a hipped roof with stables on the side facing away from the market. It is a listed building .
The city of Lingen was formerly a hub for trade and traffic. Although only a small town, the situation seemed significant enough to Emperor Charles V to establish a post office in 1550. It was responsible for all post office keepers , foremen , mailmen and postmen in the counties of Lingen, Tecklenburg and Halle in the Ravensberg region . The East Frisian, Münster and Dutch posts were also cleared in Lingen.
Until 1851 the building served as a post office, later a post office. It has been used as a restaurant since 1980. The building is owned by the city of Lingen, which has leased it to a beverage retailer, which in turn lets sub-tenants manage the restaurant. Since 2012 there have been changes of tenants and multiple closings, initially due to renovation work, then due to bankruptcy . Since Whitsun 2014, the Alte Posthalterei has been used continuously for catering again.
