The old riding arena in Elmshorn is a riding arena and a venue for cultural events.

history

The brick building was erected in 1894. It belongs to the riding and driving school of the Holsteiner Verband in Westerstraße in Elmshorn. The listed building is 40 meters long and 20 meters wide. It has been used annually for the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival since 1991 . For this purpose, a wooden floor is laid in each hall, which can accommodate up to 1000 visitors and whose good acoustics are appreciated.

The riding and driving school, to which the hall still belongs today, was founded in 1894 by the Verband der Pferdzuchtvereine in den Holsteiner Marschen eGmbH and was the first of its kind worldwide. The breeding of the Holsteiner horse in its current form began towards the end of the 19th century Century or with the abandonment of the heavy cavalry. At that time, draft horses were particularly desired, which, due to their gait, had no problems even on poorly developed roads. In 1891 already existing horse breeding associations under Georg Ahsbahs merged to form the "Association of Horse Breeding Associations in the Holstein Marches" and in 1896 the "Association of Schleswig-Holstein Geestland" was founded. These two associations came together in 1935 and were now called the “Association of Breeders of the Holstein Horse”.
