The Alte Waldschänke is a tavern in the Berlin district of Tegel ( Reinickendorf district ). The inn is the oldest restaurant in Berlin and has been run under the name Wiesenstein since 2011 .

history

Old Waldschänke (around 1900)

As early as 1650, the Alte Waldschänke building belonged to an ensemble of buildings around one kilometer north of the center of Tegel, which formed the structural boundary to the adjacent Tegel Forest . The building is still located at the southern end of Ruppiner Chaussee (towards Schulzendorf ) and at the northern end of Karolinenstrasse (towards Tegel). The building ensemble belonged to the former settlement area of the " Schloss Tegel " estate . The actual Tegel Castle is only a few hundred meters away from the Alte Waldschänke. In the 18th century, Tegel Castle was still the owner of the Alte Waldschänke.

The Alte Waldschänke building, which was originally used as a workers' residence, was converted into a restaurant as part of the expansion of the castle restaurant and subsequently renamed the "Waldschänke". The Schlossrestaurant and the Alte Waldschänke had the same tenant until well into the 20th century.

The gastronomic offer of the Alte Waldschänke was originally aimed at ordinary people and especially at traders and craftsmen who brought their goods to Berlin past the Alte Waldschänke. That is why it was popularly known as the “Kutschkneipe” at the beginning of the 20th century.

After the Second World War , from which the Alte Waldschänke was spared, the gastronomic offer was aimed at an upscale public; so the inn developed into an exclusive excursion restaurant until the 1980s. In 1964 the building was listed as a historical monument .

From 1986 the Alte Waldschänke could only be operated to a limited extent due to considerable construction defects. In 1990, a drunk youngster without a driver's license drove against the outer wall at the front door, whereupon the structural engineering was considered so unsafe that the restaurant had to be temporarily closed.

Current usage

The building was acquired by a company in 1996, completely renovated and an apartment complex was added. Until 2009, the "Gasthof Waldschänke" offered space for around 120 guests and had a beer garden for around 250 more guests, but was closed from January 2009 due to insolvency proceedings . In autumn 2011 the restaurant was reopened under the name "Wiesenstein".
