Old acidic oak forests with Quercus robur on sandy plains are a forest habitat type described in Appendix I of Directive 92/43 / EEC (Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive) of the European Union with the identification number 9190 , which is characterized by oaks on acidic sandy soils.

description

The habitat type can be a birch-pedunculate oak forest or a beech-oak mixed forest. In all cases, common oaks or sessile oaks , similar forests, are characteristic of the tree layer , but the beech-beech forest is dominant . The herb layer of this type of forest is rather poor in species, light and characterized by acid-loving species. But there are also dense grass coverings with wire smiths or bracken .

This type of forest can be found on the moraines and sands of the Vistula glacial period , sometimes also on inland dunes . Therefore, the distribution area in Germany extends to the east and the north German lowlands , but there are also larger occurrences in the west of Poland and the Czech Republic , as well as in southern Sweden , Belgium and southern England . The condition of the habitats is considered poor in all of these regions. There are much larger and healthier deposits in France. In Denmark , the condition of the deposits is even classified as good. The type of forest beside which is particularly vulnerable forestry by nutrients and pollutants and high wildlife populations . The stocks can be protected by adapted forestry or by not using the forest, in which case the dead wood remains in the forest.
