Old Protestant church in Steinsfurt

The old Protestant church in Steinsfurt , a district of the large district town of Sinsheim in the Rhein-Neckar district in northern Baden-Württemberg , was built in 1769/71 by the local Reformed community and used as a church until the inauguration of today's Evangelical Church in 1937.

history

Steinsfurt was reformed in the course of the Reformation in the Electoral Palatinate in 1556. From the 17th century there was a Reformed, a Lutheran and a Catholic congregation. The historic church of the village came to the Catholic community in the course of the Palatinate church division in 1705, but was still used by Lutherans and Reformed people until the 1760s. The Lutherans built their own church in 1767, the Reformed from 1769 built the church building discussed here. After the merger of Lutherans and Reformed people to form the Protestant regional church in Baden, the Lutheran church was sold in 1823 and the reformed church was used by the united congregation. The church was dilapidated by the end of the 19th century. In 1890 the roof turret was demolished because it was in disrepair. New construction plans were delayed considerably due to the First World War , so that the foundation stone for today's Evangelical Church was not laid until 1936 , and it was occupied the following year. After the war, the old church was first used as a cinema, then as an inn. Today there is a pub in the building.

Bells

When the church was completed, the roof turret carried at least a 175 kg bell that was cast by Anselm Franz Speck in Heidelberg in 1771 . In 1788 a bronze bell weighing 310 kg was added from the same foundry. In 1823, the two bells of the Lutheran church, which had also been cast at Speck in 1767 and 1788, were also taken over. The older one has the striking note of '', a diameter of 59 cm and a weight of 135 kg, the newer weighed 200 kg. After the bell tower was demolished in 1890, the bells were hung in the church's attic. During the First World War , the three heaviest bells had to be delivered, the Speck bell from 1767 remained. In 1922, two replacement bells weighing 228 and 510 kg were cast from bronze at the Bachert bell foundry in Karlsruhe. The bells were taken over into the new building of today's Protestant church in 1936/37.
