The Alteburg is 398  m above sea level. NN high north-eastern mountain spur of the plateau from Gossel to the Ohrdrufer Platte on the southern outskirts of Arnstadt in the Ilm district , Thuringia . It lies between the Gera valley and the Jonastal valley . The hill was originally called Jonasberg .

history

This hill was already settled in prehistoric times. At that time a high path led from the Thuringian Forest via Oberhof and Ohrdruf over the Sporn. Fortified hill settlements from the Neolithic to the late Bronze Age were located on the hill . Finds prove the settlement. Two walls and the remains of a rampart and remains of dry stone walls still exist today.

In 1841, rubble of the original Alteburg was found. These remains of the castle were from a lookout point in front of the medieval city fortifications. According to evidence, such a control room was built in 1455 and financially settled. In 1788/1789 the mountain plateau was reclaimed. The ruins of the waiting room were demolished at the end of the 19th century and the “Ganz” inn was built with stones.

In 1822, Ch. Schierholz had a poplar circle planted. In 1897 the foundation stone was laid on the mountain spur for the construction of a tower which, in memory of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/1871, was called the Kaiserturm or Bismarck tower, but is now mostly just called the Alteburgturm . The construction of the 30 meter high tower was completed in 1902. In the same year, the poplar circle was replanted.
