The Altenberger Hof is a former labor yard of the Altenberg Abbey in Cologne-Nippes . Today it houses the Nippes community center.

history

Fronhof

Archaeological excavations in the area of the courtyard have proven Roman settlement on the site, which could be dated to the 2nd century. In 1199 there was the first documentary mention of the glory of Mauenheim, on whose territory there are now trinkets. The landlord was the Cologne Kunibertsstift . The farm was first mentioned in 1252. In the following period, disputes between the provost and the collegiate chapter of St. Kunibert because of the fishing rights in the adjacent pond are documented.

In 1432 the farm was sold to the abbot of Altenberg Abbey, and in 1549 a bakery was built. In 1749 the courtyard buildings were partially rebuilt, as evidenced by a coat of arms of the Altenberg abbot Johannes Hoerdt. In 1803 the Altenberg Abbey was finally closed in the course of secularization , and the farm came into private ownership in 1813. In 1990 the city of Cologne bought the facility and set up a community center here.

St. Quirinus Court Chapel

The court chapel of St. Quirinus was located directly at the Altenberger Hof and its fish pond on a property owned by the Kunibertsstift. In 1286 a vicar was appointed for the chapel by the parish of Niehl . For a St. Leonhards altar located in the chapel, a pension was donated by the St. Apern Monastery in Cologne in 1540 . The church was destroyed after a fire in 1557 and demolished after 1665. The Quirinus-of-Neuss - patron saint in 1927 by the new Mauenheimer Roman Catholic St. Quirinus church about 700 meters northwest taken up again by the Altenberger Hof.

today

Today the Altenberger Hof belongs to the civic center in Nippes, which opened its doors in 1989 - initially as a municipal facility in the old school in Turmstrasse and later in the rebuilt Altenberger Hof in Mauenheimer Strasse. In April 2005 the association Zug um Zug eV took over the sponsorship.

The community center offers a wide range of events: concerts, operas, theater, song and dance, discussion forums, art exhibitions and much more. Parent-child groups, mid-day care and young people use it as well as seniors. Associations, initiatives and groups offer advice, support and courses on a wide variety of topics and life situations.

The sponsoring association Zug um Zug eV is a non-profit association with the primary goal of the professional and social integration of unemployed young people and adults. Zug um Zug eV has been active since 1987.

The advisory board represents the interests of the residents from the city district and advises the management on issues relating to the program, the organization and the design of the center.

Flora Symphony Orchestra

The Flora Symphony Orchestra , founded in February 2012, is the house orchestra of the Altenberger Hof. Around 80 musicians (including professionals and amateurs) from all over Cologne play in the Flora Symphony Orchestra under the direction of its conductor Thomas Jung . In addition to the weekly rehearsals, the orchestra gives up to 12 concerts a year in the barn and in summer also in the courtyard under the open sky.
