The old cemetery in Baiertal , a district of Wiesloch in the Rhein-Neckar district in northern Baden-Württemberg , emerged in 1840 from an extension of the churchyard previously used as a burial place. Its occupancy ended when the mountain cemetery was opened in 1988.

history

The original burial site in Baiertal was around the Gallus Chapel, which was attested in the Middle Ages, and was surrounded with it by a shared curtain wall. He also served for the construction of as an interdenominational church used the Evangelical Church in 1804, continues as a cemetery. In 1840 a new burial place was built to the west of the old churchyard, which was inaugurated on July 26, 1841. In 1878 the cemetery was extended to the south and walled. A plaque embedded in the wall indicates the year of construction 1878 and bears the initials of the then mayor Johann Dussel. Part of the old trees in the cemetery can be traced back to plantings at the time of the cemetery expansion. From 1965 a cemetery chapel was built in the cemetery, which was inaugurated on November 19, 1967. After Baiertal was incorporated into Wiesloch in 1972 and the population grew due to new development areas, a shortage of space in the cemetery was foreseeable, so that in 1978 the local council dealt with the question of an expansion or the development of a new cemetery. The population favored an expansion, which, however , was not considered sensible in a report by the Cemetery and Monument Working Group , so that the Baiertal mountain cemetery began to be developed in 1985 , and the burials in the old cemetery ended with its opening in 1988. In the meantime, the old cemetery has largely been redesigned into a green area, there are only a few tombs left.
