The old cemetery of Uppsala ( Swedish : Uppsala Gamla kyrkogård ) is a cemetery of the Cathedral Parish of Uppsala . The cemetery is located between Kyrkogårdsgatan, St. Johannesgatan, Karlsgatan, Krongatan, Thunbergsvägen and Engelska Parken in the Fjärdingen district of Uppsala.

history

The cemetery was put into operation at the end of the 18th century after burials in churches and in narrow cemeteries were banned for medical and hygienic reasons. In 1785 the doctor Johan Lorentz Odhelius gave a speech at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences on the subject . This speech made a great impression on King Gustav III. who gave a committed speech on the subject in Parliament a year later. The ban on church burials was implemented in 1815.

Since the middle of the 17th century, there was already a small cemetery on the site of today's cemetery. Elis Schröderheim ( Landshövding in Uppsala from 1792 to 1794) submitted a proposal, which was approved by royal resolution on July 5, 1793. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the cemetery was expanded in several steps, until the area closest to Triangeln was purchased in 1959 , giving it the size of today's area.

Landmarks in the cemetery

Uppland Artillery Regiment burial site

Uppsala's old cemetery with its many trees and avenues of trees is a popular destination for strollers. Many of the graves, especially in the eastern and oldest part, are ornately decorated, such as the bronze figure of the artist Malin Uddling on the grave of Rector Anita Nathorst or the wanderer on the family grave of the spider researcher Åke Holm. The book En levande kyrkogård by the art historian and theologian Lars Ridderstedt is a suitable hiking guide.

In the cemetery there are graves of various organizations such as the Uppland Artillery Regiment, the Mission of the Church of Sweden and other diakonia and church associations as well as student nations .
