The old market in Rostock is a square historical market place in the city center of the Hanseatic city . Besides the Neuer Markt and Universitätsplatz , it is probably the oldest in the city. It is located south of the Petrikirche and is part of the former Rostock old town, which was bordered in the west by the pit (today's Grubenstrasse ) and in the east by the city wall .

history

From the end of the 12th century to the middle of the 13th century three merchant settlements were built south of the Unterwarnow , the old, middle and new town , each with a market place and (at least) one parish church. The hill around the old market and the Petrikirche was probably first settled by "colonists" from Westphalia and today's Lower Saxony and therefore represents the nucleus of Rostock. The old market was the market place of this oldest part of Rostock. The three sub-cities merged in 1265 to form the entire city of Rostock. In this urban structure, the Neustadt with the Hopfenmarkt (today's Universitätsplatz) and the Mittelstadt with the current Neuer Markt soon emerged as the economic centers of the Hanseatic city, while the Altstadt and Alter Markt, anyway from the Mittelstadt through the pit, a former tributary of the Warnow separated, fell behind.

The Old Market, where even today the streets In St. Peter's Church , of Amberg , the bagpipe , the thief road that Lohgerber- , turning - and Altschmiedestraße and the Slüterstraße open out, was originally surrounded by wooden houses, the first already in the Half of the 13th century were replaced by stone buildings. These buildings were almost completely destroyed by the great city fire of 1677, as was the entire old town with the exception of the Petrikirche and the nearby Nikolaikirche . In the nights of bombing at the end of April 1942, the old market was again severely damaged, the Petrikirche on the market burned down and lost the spire and roof.

The so-called Eastern Old Town (ie the urban area east of the town hall) was severely neglected during the GDR era, but was spared from large-scale demolition, as in the northern old town around Wokrenterstraße . After 1990, the old market was paved with cobblestones, the infrastructure and the houses surrounding it as well as the buildings on the adjacent streets were renovated, and some buildings were rebuilt in vacant lots. In 1994 the Petrikirche's copper helmet, which was burned in 1942, was rebuilt.

Today the old market and the surrounding area are a quiet residential area in Rostock, among other things the ensemble of Petrikirchhäuser 4–6 around 1500 and 7, 8 and 10 from the 18th century is worth seeing.
