The old slaughterhouse Gießen is an industrial monument and is located on the western side of the Lahn in central Hessian Gießen on Schlachthofstraße. Erected in 1908 to 1913 in the Art Nouveau building complex was after setting the slaughterhouse sold -Betriebes for economic reasons, restored and is now used in conversion of the residential, business and a restaurant. The Alte Schlachthof was awarded the Giessen Prize in 2018 and the Hessian Monument Protection Prize in 2019 .

history

The originally municipal slaughterhouse was built in 1908–1913 as the successor to the old slaughterhouse built in 1885 by city architect Stief in the Art Nouveau style and is a cultural monument for artistic, urban and historical reasons. Privatized in 1983, the slaughterhouse was shut down in 2014 after around 100 years of operation.

The historicizing Art Nouveau building, oriented towards Romanesque styles, has a characteristic silhouette; the massive, square clock tower with a pyramidal hood and the chimney are distinctive. The building complex, which can hardly be overlooked, appears uniform thanks to the materials used, salmon-colored and cream-colored bricks and gray lung stone, and contains many decorative and structural elements such as windows, cornices and blind arcades.

The ornamental gable of the main hall contains the year 1910 and the city coat of arms, a Hessian lion with G. In addition to the main hall, which was mainly used as a battle and transit hall, there is also the former machine hall, the boiler house and various connecting structures. Over the years, the complex was expanded with modern additions, which, however, were all demolished during the extensive restoration of the central building and replaced by multi-storey residential buildings.
