The old tower in Ranzel

The Romanesque Old Tower is the preserved tower of a former Roman Catholic chapel in Ranzel , a district of Niederkassel ( Rhein-Sieg district ) in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

The Romanesque tower was built in the 12th century as the tower of the St. Aegidius chapel, whose right of collation belonged to the Provost of Cologne. The chapel was a branch of the parish church in Lülsdorf and was the patron saint of St. Pankratius, the former parish patron of the mother church. In the 18th century the nave was rebuilt as a simple hall 14 meters long and five meters wide. The choir was directly adjacent to Ranzeler Hauptstrasse. Since the chapel no longer had enough space for the worship service, a new Roman Catholic parish church was built in 1966, which also received the Aegidius patronage . Because of the expansion of Porzer Strasse, the nave of the chapel was laid down in 1970 and the tower was made into a memorial.

architecture

The Romanesque tower is five storeys high, the bottom is made of quarry stone with corner blocks made of Wolsdorf stone, the three upper floors are made of tuff and is externally completely undivided. In the bell chamber there is a double window with a central column with bases without corner leaves and very simple capitals on each side. The tower hall has a cross vault.
