history
The neo-Romanesque style building has a 104 meter high clock tower and was designed by EJ Lennox in 1889. Lennox immortalized his name on the scrollwork on the first floor. When it opened on September 18, 1899, it was the largest building in the city and the largest administrative building in North America. Previously, a building on St. Lawrence Market served as the city's town hall.
In 1965 the city administration moved to the new town hall. According to the original plans, the building of the old town hall should be demolished and give way to a number of skyscrapers. Only the clock tower was to be preserved. However, the public prevented this project. The building is currently used as a court of law by the Ontario Provincial Government.
