The old castle is the ruin of a high medieval hill castle near Scheiden , a district of the municipality of Losheim am See in the Merzig-Wadern district in Saarland .
The remains of the walls of the historically inconceivable castle complex can be found on the Adelsköpfchen , approx. 1/2 km east of the center of Scheiden village. An upper castle on the edge of a high plateau, against which it is protected by a ditch, can be clearly distinguished from a larger lower castle approx. 10 m lower on a mountain terrace in front of it. The upper castle is almost rectangular and had a thick shield wall against the attack side. In the lower castle, at the southernmost tip, there are the remains of a slightly higher rectangular building as well as the traces of a surrounding wall with a gate on the east side.
There is no documentary evidence for the castle site (the name Old Castle is post-medieval). However, based on the complex and the remains of the wall, it can be dated to the 12th or 13th century.
