The old castle Könitz is a castle in the district of Könitz in the district of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt in Thuringia .

The castle site is located in the uppermost part of the Kees valley, southeast of the village, next to a spring pond, about 25 meters below the state road 1105 - known in the Middle Ages as Hohen Straße , which passes just south. The surrounding area is heavily shaped by the old mining (Pingenfelder). Finds point to a high to late medieval system of a tower hill castle (Motte).

No documentary information whatsoever has been found from the castle site in the Kees valley southeast of Könitz. It will certainly be the seat of a lower rural nobility . The castle was built in the 13th / 14th centuries. Century of its origin classified as a tower hill castle . The castle hill is about three meters high and eighteen meters in diameter. There is still a ditch around the hill . The pond dammed up next to the complex probably served fortification considerations. He fed the trench with water.
