Old High German Isidor

The Old High German Isidor is a translation of the Latin writings of Isidore of Seville into the Old High German language. The translation was made in Austrasia towards the end of the 8th century . The writing language is West Rhine-Franconian, most likely Lorraine. The name of the translator is unknown.

Origin and structure

The translation is partially preserved and follows the text “De fide catholica contra Iudaeos”, in which it is stated that the Messiah prophecies apply to Christ and that it is not the Jews but the Christians who are God's people. There is also a fragmentary translation of the Gospel of Matthew , as well as sermons and fragments of sermons. According to the current state of scientific research, it is assumed that the Old High German Isidor can be traced back to a single agent who worked for or at the court of Charlemagne. You will find a regular orthography (spelling) and the otherwise common word-for-word translations are far exceeded. Besides the Old High German Tatian , Isidor is the second great translation achievement from the time of Charlemagne . The main tradition is bilingual in Paris. lat. 2326 of the Bibliothèque nationale de France . The translation breaks off on sheet 22r of the 79-sheet Isido text.
