The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Fürstenwalde (Spree)

The building of the Evangelical Lutheran Church Fürstenwalde in Fürstenwalde / Spree in Brandenburg is located at Dr.-Wilhelm-Külz-Str. 55 (corner of Sembritzki Street). The parish belongs to the Independent Evangelical Lutheran Church (SELK) in Sprengel Ost, church district Berlin-Brandenburg . It has been a listed building since 1993 .

history

The architect of the church building was Gustav Goetze. The foundation stone was laid on September 19, 1882, and the inauguration took place on November 4, 1883. Because the Old Lutheran congregations were forbidden from building church towers and using bells at that time, the church only has a raised gable wall at the front. The rectory was built together with the church to the right of the nave . In 1909, a community hall was added to the left of the nave. The church was only slightly damaged by a cannon shot during World War II. Church, rectory and parish hall were thoroughly renovated in 1992. The Lutheran Church is the only church building in the city that survived two world wars almost undamaged.

Reasons for monument protection

In the decision of the monument protection authority from 1993 it says: The church, which was built by the architect Gustav Goetze in neo-Gothic and historicizing forms, is a towerless, single-nave hall with five bays, which was built as a brick building (red bricks) . The front and front sides face east; the choir side with drawn-in, lower choir to the west. A steep pitched roof covers the nave. The exterior construction has an economical, but targeted use of structural elements. The long sides and the choir polygon are illuminated per yoke from a high, rounded, closed window filled with simple tracery. The yoke division is marked by buttresses protruding strongly towards the outside, which are crooked over the continuous, strongly profiled cornice. Halfway up the wall, the entire nave is surrounded by double cornices , which are accompanied by strips of black glazed brick. The actual face is undoubtedly the gable front facing the street. The church with rectory is unique among the church buildings in Fürstenwalde in its completely intact internal and external structure. For art history, the harmony of structure and decor as well as the equipment, which exemplifies the historical style characteristics, is of great importance, so that church construction is an important document for research into architecture at the end of the 19th century. The building, designed in sparing forms, with stylistic devices of historical architecture, has an extremely harmonious overall effect, with the interior and exterior construction being coordinated with one another. The monument value is therefore also on a high artistic level.
