The Altmannbrücke is a road bridge that crosses the tracks south of Hamburg Central Station . The bridge connects Steinstrasse with Kurt-Schumacher-Allee, with the boundary between the Sankt Georg and Hammerbrook districts running in the middle of the five-lane carriageway.
The bridge was named after the Bremen landscape gardener Isaak Altmann , who was commissioned to dismantle the Hamburg fortifications in the first half of the 19th century , which he completed in 1833. In his honor, a hill in the ramparts south of the stone gate was named after him. After the opening of the monastery gate in 1850, Altmannstraße was created as a new road connection from Steinstraße to Besenbinderhof .
The first railroad tracks of the connecting line to Klostertor and Berliner Bahnhof , which opened in 1866, were initially at street level; With the traffic at the time, it was still sufficient for a railway official to walk in front of incoming trains with a signal lamp. It was not until the main train station was built (opened in 1906) that the tracks were moved into the former moat and Altmannstrasse was now designed as a bridge over the same.
After being destroyed by bombing in the Second World War , the Altmann Bridge was first poorly repaired. In 1963 the bridge was finally largely renewed and widened. The former Hühnerposten railway post office south of the bridge (opened in 1904) was converted in 2004 into the central library of the Hamburg public library ; In the course of this renovation, a parking garage was built over the former head tracks in this area and the newly created open space above was renamed Arno-Schmidt- Platz.
