Altonaer Bicycle Club from 1869/80

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Altona Bicycle Club from 1869/80 (ABC) is the oldest cycling club in the world. It was founded on April 17, 1869 under the name Eimsbüttler Velozipeden-Reit-Club in Eimsbüttel , a former rural community near Hamburg, among others by Harro Feddersen , who is considered the first bicycle dealer in Germany. In 1881, when high bikes were already modern, the club changed its name to Altonaer Bicycle Club . Initially, only public driving and artificial cycling on the Velociped (high-speed foot) were operated. Later other disciplines such as track cycling, road racing, cycling polo and cycling ball were added.

The ABC cycling festivals held a special position; they often served charitable purposes, but were also major social events for the bourgeoisie. The association set the tone above all in cycling . The ABC became temporarily well known through its first chairman Gregers Nissen , who as a cycling official and German bicycle pioneer campaigned for cycle paths, among other things.

In the 1980s, the then Federal President Karl Carstens honored the club for its special merits in cycling. Since there were not enough offspring for the bike ball game, the number of members has fallen sharply since the 1990s. In 2001 the ABC was deleted from the Hamburg register of associations after it had no longer been able to prove its non-profit status since 1996.

The ABC was re-established in August 2013. Today's ABC sets sporty accents in racing cycling and is particularly active in the social and cultural history of bicycles and cycling.
