Gregers Christian Nissen (born May 3, 1867 in Soholm , † June 20, 1942 in Hamburg ) was a German bicycle pioneer and cycling official.

Life

Gregers Nissen was a primary school teacher and father of ten children. He himself was orphaned at the age of seven and grew up with relatives in Leck . At an early age he bought an old iron high wheel , which he repaired himself. In 1885 he moved to Eckernförde to study ; there he was one of the founders of the "RG Eckernförde" in 1887. He went on long journeys by bike, initially still on his high-bike.

In 1890 Nissen was transferred to Altona as a teacher . In the same year he was elected first chairman of the oldest German cycling club, the Altonaer Bicycle Club from 1869/80 . In 1891 Nissen joined the Gau board of the German Cyclists Association (DRB); As such, the following year he organized a “tribute trip” with around 1200 participants to Friedrichsruh , the residence of the former German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck . From 1893 he held the post of "hiking specialist" for decades at the DRB and later at the Bund Deutscher Radfahrer (Association of German Cyclists ) and was called the "prophet of cycling ". In 1915 Nissen (in vain) suggested the systematic construction of cycle paths based on the model of the Netherlands in Germany. For this purpose, he initiated the campaign “Create cycle paths for town and country!” , Which was signed by well-known personalities, including Carl Diem .

Nissen also made a special contribution to cycling by writing extensive literature and cycling maps. His book Walking on the bike , for example, appeared in several editions.

Nissen died shortly after his 75th birthday.
