Altschönau is a part of the municipality of Neuschönau in the Freyung-Grafenau district .
location
The village is three kilometers north of Neuschönau in the middle of the Bavarian Forest National Park .
history
The name Schönau was first mentioned as Schönaw in 1395 , when the Counts von Hals had eight peasant fiefs laid out. In 1417 the oldest glassworks in the Grafenau district was built there. In 1615 the Zadlerhütte is mentioned, later the Altkaiserhütte. Over the centuries the village of Schönau became "Altschönau" and the village of Neukaiserhütte became "Neuschönau". Altschönau has been part of this municipality since the foundation of the municipality of Neuschönau (until 1981 Schönanger).
